Ballet Virginia specializes in a diverse ballet syllabus inspired by the American, Russian, Italian and French schools. This solid technical base insures added success in the Modern Dance, Jazz, Tap and Character classes also offered at Ballet Virginia. Each Ballet Virginia instructor’s motivation is to nurture a child’s natural desire to dance. Musicality and artistry are developed joyously in our supportive environment. Like-minded students enjoy a camaraderie that will provide wonderful memories and life-long friendships.

If you are considering a dance education simply for the love of movement, or your child dreams of a professional career, Ballet Virginia has designed the following four programs to suit your needs.

The Children’s Program is for ages 2 years and up; it is the perfect introduction for the young dancer, instills a love for the art, and provides the tools necessary for success as a student progresses.  Simply stated, this is where a dancer “learns how to learn."

The Community Program is designed for the dancer who is not yet certain of their career goals, or is involved with other activities, which limit their commitment to dance. Ballet Virginia will insure proper training in the event their passion leads them to a college dance program or a professional career.

The Performing Company is the final tier of the professional program. Acceptance into the Performing Company is by audition only. Dancers are ranked as Honor Members, Performing Members, Interns and Apprentices. Each dancer receives up to 23 hours per week of concentrated training that includes technical classes and rehearsals. Additional master level and elective courses are offered to create a versatile classical ballet dancer. The Performing Company dancers are the primary dancers of all Ballet Virginia International’s productions. Because of the fundamental technical training offered, many of our Performing Company members have gone on to professional dance careers and university programs

The Adult Program offers drop-in classes for ages 18 and up in Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Pointe (must be approved by the instructor),  Ballet Fitness, Tap and Character, allowing for busy schedules.

CLASS PLACEMENT Students will be placed in a level of instruction suited to their technique and comprehension. Advancement is decided by the Directors and faculty and is considered on an individual basis.  Considerations often include a student’s physical development with regard to injury prevention. Children progress at their own rate and should be rewarded for their own personal achievements without making comparisons to other students.  Audition is required for acceptance into the Performing Company.

ATTENDANCE
Regular attendance of classes is essential in order to advance through the levels of study. If a student must miss a class due to illness or personal emergency, please notify the office prior to class time. Up to three missed classes per session may be made up if there is an appropriate class available (same level or lower) within the session. More than five missed classes per semester without a doctor’s note or legitimate family emergency will result in reevaluation of level placement and possible loss of performance roles.

DRESS CODE
Ballet Virginia maintains that the use of a uniform dress code is a necessary aspect of a successful learning environment. Students are required to wear the designated color leotard for their level. The only leotard styles allowed are spaghetti strap, tank top, long sleeve, short sleeve and cap sleeve; no crisscross back straps, rhinestones, mesh or lace inserts are permitted.  Hair must be secured in a bun and away from the face and eyes. The only jewelry permitted is stud earrings. All students are expected to maintain a neat appearance.
